Retreats

Grade 9: Our grade nine ‘mega-retreat’, which takes place on September 24 at the St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre in Oakville, will gather all grade nines for an inspirational day of community building, faith formation, and prayer.  Students will reflect on how each of them can build their identity, self-esteem, and future action on their relationship with our loving and merciful God.  The school chaplaincy leader (Mr. Smalridge) and local parish youth minister (Maria Espinoza) will facilitate.  Unity Charity will provide inspiration and entertainment.  This retreat will also allow for grade nine students to meet with their Link Crew groups in order to ‘debrief’ on events in the first few weeks of school.  Grade nine homeroom teachers will accompany and supervise their class for the day.

Grade 10: Our new grade ten retreat will take place at the John Paul II Cultural Centre in Mississauga (dates: Sept 17&30, and May 4&11).  Led by the chaplaincy leader and the local parish youth minister, students will reflect on the importance of building a personal relationship with God through Jesus and his Church.  The Alpha Youth film series will be a primary resource.  After lunch, all students will bus to Erindale Park for an hour of prayer and fellowship.  Each retreat will combine three religion classes at once, and religion teachers will supervise the day.  Dates TBA.

Grade 11:  The focus here is seeking to enrich and deepen students’ knowledge of the grade 11 world religions course through experiences of actually visiting various places of worship.  Before and after the retreat day, students will participate in prayer and discussion sessions with the Chaplaincy Leaderin order to frame their exploration of other religions within the teachings of the Catholic Church.  Typical sites include BAPS Mandir, Buddha Light Temple, Solel Synagogue, and Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church.

Grade 12: This retreat involves a day of service at the Good Shepherd Centre in Toronto.  We learn about social justice and charity, and we encounter Christ by serving the poor and oppressed.  The day includes cooking and cleaning at the homeless shelter and meal program.  Retreats will be organized one religion class at a time, with the religion teacher supervising.  The chaplaincy leader will facilitate.  Some groups may visit St. Paul’s Basilica across the street.  Dates: Sept 14, Oct 1, Oct 19, Nov 2, Dec. 7, Dec.15, Feb 12, March 4, March 31, April 1, April 27, and May 3.

Other retreats (e.g. student council):

We plan to offer an optional, extended-day retreat for students who wish to cultivate a deeper relationship with God:  e.g. inner city walks, Teen Ranch retreats, optional days at the Good Shepherd Centre, retreats with young adults with special needs (e.g. at the Sara Elizabeth Centre), and an optional ‘Holy Spirit’ retreat for grade nines and tens who are following the Alpha Youth Film Series.  We also have an annual retreat in the spring for the student leaders in the Link transition program.

A Spirit of Justice and Charity

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord."
